Nightlife: from Trastevere to Testaccio

Nightlife in Trastevere is lively, but in Testaccio it’s overwhelming: here you will find the richest choice of night clubs in Rome, just 20 minutes walking from Trastevere Bed and Breakfast. Just cross Ponte Sublicio and you will be in Testaccio.

Via di Monte Testaccio in particular is where you can find some of the most popular nightclubs in the area.

Akab (Via di Monte Testaccio, 69) is a big three-floors disco, where each floor has a different musical style, from commercial music to hip hop and house music.

Radio Londra (Via di Monte Testaccio, 66), is the place to be for  house music lovers.

Caffè Latino is the right place if you are looking for live music. It hosted the live performance of both great italian artists such as Pino Daniele, and international artists such as Dizzie Gillespie.

Caruso Cafè de Oriente (Via di Monte Testaccio, 36) is just perfect if latin music is your favourite. From Mambo to Reggaeton, all of south-american beats are to be found here.

Rising Love lies a bit further than other clubs (Via delle Conce, 14), but it’s definitely worth a short trip, since it’s the new thing in the roman club scene, featuring dj set and video projections. You can get there with a 25 mins walk or take bus 3 until Piazzale Ostiense, then walk until Via Ostiense.

Su e giù per Trastevere: itinerari e monumenti

Si potrebbe dire che la principale attrazione di Trastevere sia Trastevere stesso, con i suoi vicoli e la sua atmosfera, ma il quartiere racchiude anche diversi luoghi di interesse.

Per una visita rapida, il consiglio è di entrare nella Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (Via di San Calisto, che si trova nell’omonima e vivace piazza ad appena 5 minuti dal Trastevere Bed & Breakfast. Si tratta di una chiesa molto antica (la costruzione risale al IV secolo d.C.), resa unica dagli incredibili mosaici che ne adornano sia la facciata che l’abside. La Basilica è aperta tutti i giorni dalle 7.30 alle 13 e dalle 16 alle 19.

Se avete a disposizione un’intera mattinata, è d’obbligo visitare l’Orto Botanico (Largo Cristina di Svezia, 24): uno dei maggiori in Italia, si estende per 12 ettari e comprende 2000 mq di serre. Riparato dal colle Gianicolo e irrigato da ruscelli, l’Orto ospita circa 3000 specie di piante. È aperto dalle 9 alle 19, e la visita dura circa 2-3 ore (c’è possibilità di visita guidata).
L’Orto è raggiungibile a piedi dal Bed and Breakfast in 10 minuti.

Per gli amanti dei buoni affari, la domenica mattina è da dedicare al mercato di Porta Portese. Dal Bed & Breakfast vi basterà dirigervi verso Ponte Sublicio: il mercato inizia in Piazza di Porta Portese (5 minuti a piedi dal Bed & Breakfast) e si estende per diversi chilometri. Nel mercato si trova un po’ di tutto ed  è solitamente affollato. Prendetevi il tempo che vi serve: il mercato è aperto dalle 6:00 alle 14:00, il consiglio è di passarci l’intera mattinata per trovare le offerte migliori.

Da non perdere la veduta spettacolare di Roma che si gode dal Colle Gianicolo e dal Parco omonimo dove ogni giorno il cannone spara a salve per segnare il mezzogiorno. La strada per arrivare non è lunga, ma è in salita. Per i meno sportivi, il consiglio è di arrivare in via Mameli e da lì prendere il piccolo bus elettrico 115, che vi porterà in cima. Nel Parco troverete anche il Monumento a Garibaldi.

Infine, dedicate un’ora a visitare il Museo di Roma in Trastevere, in Piazza Sant’Egidio. Il Museo – che si trova a 10 minuti dal Bed & Breakfast – ospita numerose esposizioni durante l’anno (tra queste le fotografie premiate del World Press Photo) ed una collezione permanente dedicata a Trastevere.

Getting around Trastevere: itineraries and discoveries

It could be said that Trastevere’s main attraction lies in the neighbourhood itself, with its narrow roads and its atmosphere, but the area also offers many interesting places to visit.

If you don’t want to spend too much time, pay a quick visit to Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (Via di San Calisto), placed in the omonimous and lively square, just 5 minutes from Trastevere Bed & Breakfast. It is a really ancient church (it was built in the IV century A.D.), unique because of its incredible mosaics, enriching both the facade and the absid. The Basilica is open everyday from 7.30 to 13 and from 16 to 19.

If you have the whole morning, you must see the Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden, Largo Cristina di Svezia, 24): one of the biggest of its kind in Italy, covers a surface of 12 hectars and and encloses 2000 square meters of greenhouses. Shielded by Gianicolo Hill and watered by streams, the Garden hosts more than 3000 species of plants. Opening time is 9 to 19, the visit will take you from 2 to 3 hours (you can have guided visit). You can reach the Garden from the Bed and Breakfast with a 10 minutes walk.

If you love bargains, you should spend Sunday morning in Porta Portese market. From the Bed & Breakfast just head to Ponte Sublicio: the market begins in Piazza di Porta Portese (5 minutes walking from the Bed & Breakfast) and goes on for several kilometres. In the market you will find a bit of everything, and usually lots of people. Take your time: the market is open from 6:00 to 14:00. Spend the whole morning there if you want to find the best offers.

Don’t miss the spectacular view of Rome from Gianicolo Hill and the omonimous Park, where every day the cannon shoots to mark noon. The road to get there is not long, but it is steep. If you are not a sporty type, go to via Mameli and take the small electric bus 115, that will take you to the top of the hill. In the Park you will also find the monument to Garibaldi.

Also pay a visit to Museo di Roma in Trastevere, in St. Egidio Square: it is just 10 minutes from the Bed and Breakfast, and during the year it hosts some interesting exhibitions (including the stunning photos from World Press Photo) as well as a permanent collection dedicated to Trastevere.

Buongiorno, Trastevere! Come si vive in un Bed and Breakfast nel cuore antico di Roma

Trascorrere un po’ di tempo qui a Trastevere – che sia per vacanza, studio o lavoro – fa capire molto di Roma.
Il Trastevere Bed & Breakfast offre ai suoi ospiti la possibilità di immergersi per un po’ nell’atmosfera di una Roma d’altri tempi, a pochi minuti dalle mete turistiche ma in un ritmo totalmente diverso. Trastevere era – fino a non molto tempo fa – una sorta di paese con le proprie abitudini, che fronteggiava la Roma “del Colosseo” dall’altra sponda del Tevere (non a caso la definizione “noantri” che i trasteverini danno di sé ancora oggi).

Trastevere inoltre è il quartiere perfetto da vivere in Bed & Breakfast, una sistemazione che permette di conoscere la città più da abitanti che da turisti.

Chi conosce la Roma dei monumenti imponenti e delle rovine romane resta sempre un po’ stupito dalle viuzze medievali di Trastevere, dai suoi negozietti spesso rimasti immutati dagli anni ’60, dalle trattorie che si affacciano su piazzette nascoste.

Sin dalla mattina presto Trastevere rivela la propria natura rilassata e piacevole. I bar – che a Trastevere non mancano – si affollano di romani e trasteverini che, in attesa di caffè e cornetto scambiano battute con il barista. Qualche gabbiano solitario si allontana dal Tevere per planare tra i banchi del pesce nel mercato di Piazza San Cosimato. I negozi aprono con calma, mentre si cominciano a vedere i primi passanti e le prime macchine. Per le vie del quartiere si inizia a spandere l’odore del pane caldo di forno. Il consiglio è di vivere la mattinata con tutta la tranquillità che Trastevere consente: fare colazione all’aperto, sotto un bel sole primaverile, lontani dal traffico delle grandi arterie cittadine.

Il giorno a Trastevere è animato ma non stressante. L’intero quartiere è una grande rete di ristoranti, trattorie, osterie, pizzerie, locali, bar. Non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta sia per pranzo che per cena (ne parleremo più nel dettaglio prossimamente), e i tavolini all’aperto sono sempre popolati. Da lì si gode un’invidiabile punto di vista sull’umanità che scorre per le vie del quartiere.

La notte a Trastevere è giovane. Le viuzze sonnacchiose della zona si popolano di ragazzi arrivati da tutta Roma per divertirsi nell’atmosfera un po’ bohémienne di questo “ex-paese”. Al tramonto infatti Trastevere cambia volto ed appaiono i molti locali alla moda, sparpagliati tra le vecchie osterie a conduzione familiare. Qui non si viene per le discoteche, ma per bere un drink tra amici, chiacchierare, passeggiare, godersi un po’ la brezza del fiume, magari mentre si beve un prosecco da Freni & Frizioni, uno degli aperitif bar più in voga del momento.

Ad un certo punto della notte, il popolo dei locali si ritira, lasciando le vie silenziose e addormentate. Nel frattempo, i fornai iniziano a preparare il pane per la mattina dopo.

Good Morning, Trastevere! Living in a Bed & Breakfast in the ancient heart of Rome

Spending some time here in Trastevere - be it for holiday, study or work – is a good way to understand Rome.

Trastevere Bed and Breakfast offers its guests the chance to immerse themselves into the atmosphere of a forgotten Rome, few minutes from the tourist sights but in a whole different rhythm.

Trastevere used to be – until not long ago – a sort of a village with its own rituals, facing  Rome “of the Colusseum” on the other side of the Tiber (still today, Trastevere’s inhabitants call themselves “noantri”, “ourselves”).

Furthermore, Trastevere is a perfect neighbourhood to be experienced in a Bed & Breakfast, a kind of accomodation that allows you to know the city more as a local than as a tourist.

Those who know Rome for its imposing monuments and roman ruins always end up surprised when they see Trastevere’s medieval streets, its shops, often unchanged since the 60′s, the trattorie in small hidden squares.

From the early morning Trastevere shows its relaxed and pleasant nature. The bars - Trastevere is sure not lacking bars – are crowded with romans and Trastevere locals, who enjoy exchanging jokes with the barman as they wait for their caffè e cornetto (coffee and pastry). Some lone seagull diverts from the river to land among the fish stalls in Piazza San Cosimato’s market. Shops open with no rush, and you can see the first passers-by and cars. The smell of oven-warm bread spreads in the streets of the neighbourhood. It’s adviceable to live the morning with all the quietness that Trastevere allows: having breakfast outside, under a nice spring sun, away from the traffic of the big arteries.

The day in Trastevere is lively but not stressing. The whole neighbourhood is a big network of restaurants, trattorie, osterie, pizzerie, clubs, bars. You will have plenty of choice, both for lunch and dinner (we will explore the subject soon), and there’s always people sitting at the tables outside. From there, you can enjoy a perfect point of view on the flowing mankind of the neighbourhood.

Night in Trastevere is young. The small sleepy streets of the zone get crowded with youth coming from all of Rome to have fun in the bohémienne atmosphere of this “former village”. At dusk, Trastevere changes its face and many trendy clubs just appear, scattered among the old family-owned restaurants. They don’t come here for disco, but rather to have a drink with friends, chatter, stroll and enjoy some breeze from the river, maybe while having some prosecco from Freni & Frizioni, one of the most trendy aperitif bars.

At a certain time of the night, the people of the clubs withdraws, leaving the streets silent and sleepy. In the meanwhile, bakers start making bread for the next morning.
