Public Transport: Bus, Tram & Metro
The bad news is that Rome Public Transport is not very reliable. You may miss the bus and then wait 30 mins for the next on the same line. Or you may experience some 10mins delay of the metro due to (frequent) technical damages.

The good news is that Rome Public Transport is very cheap compared to all the biggest capital cities in the world. You can get a 75-mins unlimited ticket for just €1 or the daily ticket for only €4. And all these metrebus tickets can be used on all public transport within Rome:

• on buses, trams, trolleybuses and Cotral coaches
• on the metro lines A and B (for one journey only, using both lines but without going out from the turnstiles)
• on Met.Ro regional trains: Rome-Lido, Rome-Viterbo, Rome-Pantano
• on Trenitalia regional trains (for one journey only, in one direction only, travelling second class

TAXI
Do not – ever – trust Rome TAXI Drivers. If they say they will be there in 2 minutes, then they will probably be late. If they say the fare is only €5, you will probably have to pay €10 or more. It is not always their fault. There is not too much they can do in traffic jam (a common problem in Rome). And remember to take only white TAXI with a regular (and visible) licence. And, if you can, take a TAXI with a local friend. You know, TAXI drivers tend to cheat foreign tourists.

Foot
Rome downtown is relatively big, so you have to walk a lot to get – for instance – from S. Pietro to S. Giovanni. But if you stay in Trastevere B&B, you are 10 minute-walk from all the main attractions.

Car
Hey, just kidding. You must avoid car while in Rome.

We are almost talking about a neighbour here, and what a neighbour! Akropolis is probably one of the best greek tavernas in Rome, and it is so close to Trastevere Bed and Breakfast you will be there before you know it. Owned and managed by Antonios, a Greek guy from Crete, and his son Gabriele, Akropolis will satisfy both light appetites and night cravings. Have a seat at one of its simple tables, surrounded by every greek item you can conceive and actual greek music – not the touristic kind.

Our advice is to start with a selection of the world-famous Greek dips: tzatziki (yoghurt and cucumbers), melintzanosalata (aubergine dip), tahini (sesame paste) and taramosalata (fish eggs paste), accompanied by the mouth-watering pita (greek bread). Then you can go straight for the meat (souvlakia or gyros), served in pita bread with delicious fries on top, or pick other greek specialties as the dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) or the melintzanokeftedes (amazing aubergine croquettes). This is just a first idea of what you will find. Add greek wines and spirits and desserts, and you will find a place that will make you come back. You can also choose take away.

Akropolis is open Tuesday to Sunday, evenings only, 19:30 to 23:30. Reservations are usually not accepted, so make sure to be there early, especially on weekend when finding a table can be a mission impossible.

We think that an Italian holiday should be your occasion to reconnect with true flavours. So say goodbye to frozen foods and chemical stuff and step into a world where food is fresh, genuine and local like it used to be. Take a short walk from Trastevere Bed and Breakfast and you will end up right into the heart of Trastevere, Piazza San Cosimato. Here you will find one of the most beloved open-air markets of Rome. Monday to Saturday, both locals and visitors come here from the early morning to pick the best grocery, meat, fish and flowers. Fruits and vegetables are usually grown locally by the very people who will sell it to you. This means the taste is rich, the quality is great and unaltered. Plus, it has a low carbon footprint!

If you are a carnivore, go for some gorgeous cuts of tasty meat. If you prefer fish, you will find it a stall for it, too: fresh fish arrives here every day. So fresh that you will normally see one or two seagulls patiently waiting on a nearby wall to get their “share”. Never mind them: they have their own deal with the stall owner. The San Cosimato market is not huge, and it’s probably less frantic than the one in Campo dei Fiori. The square has been recently renovated, thus giving the market too a tidier look. Remember that the market closes after lunch, so you’d better set your alarm if you want to get the best stuff!

Antica Caciara is located just around the corner and you simply cannot miss it: just follow the typical smell of cheese, ham and other Italian specialties. Basically, here you will find the best Italian food: Pecorino Romano, Caciotta, Parmigiano, Pasta, Prosciutto, Coppa, Porchetta, Ricotta and so on.

You can just have a great sandwich with ham and cheese or buy tons of Pecorino Romano to fill your luggage, it’s up to you!

Be sure to ask the super-kind and super-expert owner of the shop (named Roberto) about all your needs: he will be glad to satisfy your requests with a smile on his face and he could even try to speak english to you!

Don’t miss the Antica Caciara, just a few meters away from Trastevere Bed & Breakfast!

For a quick lunch

If you are thinking about a quick meal to eat on the fly, Via San Francesco a Ripa – where the Bed & Breakfast is located – is a great starting point: here you will find Sandwich House “Fame Nera”, several pizzerias and the Antica Caciara, a store with cheeses, hams and other specialties where you can get gorgeous sandwiches.

Just around the corner – in  Via Natale del Grande – you will find another “norcineria” (cheese and ham shop), Iacozzilli, as well as Planet Kebab, maybe one of the best kebab houses in Trastevere.

For a typical roman meal

Trastevere abounds with tipical restaurants and trattorie, often family run, esssential to the eye but absolutely genuine when it comes to the flavors. Two of these restaurants are located in Piazza de Renzi, few steps from Vicolo del Moro and 5 minutes from Via San Francesco a Ripa: Corrado and Augusto. In both these placese you will find a very simple aestethics, but a rich cuisine. It’s adviceable to show up early, as queues form quickly here.

Not far from Piazza De Renzi, in Vicolo del Moro 53 you will find Mario’s, another trattoria where you will taste the best of roman cuisine, alongside with a nice rosetta bread.

For an ethnic meal

Even though Trastevere is a strongly roman neighbourhood, it has its share of ethnic cuisine. If sushi is tickling  your fantasy, then head for TakeSushi (Viale Trastevere, 4), not far from Via San Francesco a Ripa. Otherwise you can enjoy a dinner in Miyabi 2, serving japanese cuisine (also kaiten) as well as vietnamese.

Strolling on Via Francesco a Ripa you will first find yourselves in India, with the indian restauran Jaipur (Via San Francesco a Ripa, 66), then in Greece with greek restaurant Akropolis.

For an aperitif

Trastevere offers you a wide choice for the aperitif, too. First of all, it is definitely worth to take a short walk to Freni e Frizioni (Via del Politeama, 4), one of the most loved bars for the aperitif people.

Ombre Rosse, with its tables in the very pictoresque Piazza Sant’Egidio, is another favourite of Trastevere’s people.

Plus, for the pub lovers: choose Big Hilda, Vicolo del Cinque, 33.

Per un pranzo veloce

Se la vostra idea è un pranzo da consumare al volo perché non avete tempo da perdere, Via San Francesco a Ripa – dove si trova il Bed & Breakfast – è un buon punto di partenza: qui trovate la panineria Fame Nera, diverse pizzerie al taglio, e l’Antica Caciara, una norcineria dove potete ordinare panini farciti dei migliori salumi e formaggi tipici.

Basta voltare l’angolo in Via Natale del Grande per trovare un’altra norcineria, Iacozzilli, e Planet Kebab, uno dei migliori negozi di kebab a Trastevere.

Per un pranzo /cena romano tipico

Trastevere abbonda di ristoranti e trattorie tipiche, spesso a conduzione familiare, spartani nell’apparenza ma assolutamente genuini nei sapori. Due di questi ristoranti si trovano in Piazza de Renzi, a pochi passi da Vicolo del Moro e a 5 minuti da Via San Francesco a Ripa: si tratta di Corrado e Augusto. In entrambi questi locali troverete un’estetica “essenziale” e una cucina “di sostanza”. È consigliabile arrivare presto, la fila si forma molto rapidamente.

A poca distanza da Piazza De Renzi, in vicolo del Moro, 53 si trova Mario’s, altra trattoria dove potrete gustare il meglio della cucina romana accompagnato da una buona rosetta.

Per un pranzo / cena etnico

Pur essendo un quartiere fortemente romano, Trastevere ha anche un’offerta di locali etnici. Se avete voglia di sushi, potete provare TakeSushi (viale Trastevere, 4), a pochissimi passi da Via San Francesco a Ripa. In alternativa, in Vicolo della Pelliccia trovate Miyabi 2, che offre cucina giapponese (anche kaiten) e vietnamita.

Passeggiando su Via Francesco a Ripa vi troverete prima in India, con il ristorante indiano Jaipur (Via San Francesco a Ripa, 66) e poi in Grecia, nel ristorante greco Akropolis (Via San Francesco a Ripa, 103).

Per un aperitivo

Anche per l’aperitivo, Trastevere offre una scelta ampia. Tanto per cominciare, vale la pena fare una breve passeggiata fino a Freni e Frizioni (Via del Politeama 4), uno dei locali più frequentati dal popolo dell’aperitivo trasteverino.

Altro locale popolare è Ombre Rosse, con i suoi tavolini affacciati su Piazza Sant’Egidio, incantevole piazzetta dal tipico sapore trasteverino.

Infine, per gli amanti del pub, la scelta non può che cadere sul Big Hilda, in Vicolo del Cinque, 33.

In particolare, Via di Monte Testaccio ospita alcuni tra i più frequentati locali notturni della zona.

Akab (Via di Monte Testaccio, 69) è una grande discoteca su 3 piani indipendenti, ciascuno con un diverso stile musicale. Qui potrete ascoltare musica commerciale, hip hop, house.

Radio Londra (Via di Monte Testaccio, 66), è una vera istituzione per gli amanti della house music.

Caffè Latino è il locale giusto se cercate musica dal vivo. Qui si sono esibiti Pino Daniele, Dizzie Gillespie, Alex Baroni, Marina Rei. La live music è la formula del successo.

Caruso Cafè de Oriente (Via di Monte Testaccio, 36) è invece la scelta giusta per gli amanti della musica latina: dal Mambo al Reggaeton, tutti i ritmi del continente sudamericano.

Rising Love è un po’ più lontano rispetto agli altri locali (Via delle Conce, 14), ma vale la pena arrivare fino a qui per scoprire la novità della scena club romana, tra dj set e videoproiezioni. Rising Love è raggiungibile con una passeggiata di 25 minuti, ma se volete accorciare le distanze potete prendere l’autobus 3 fino a Piazzale Ostiense, e poi dirigervi a piedi verso Via Ostiense.

Via di Monte Testaccio in particular is where you can find some of the most popular nightclubs in the area.

Akab (Via di Monte Testaccio, 69) is a big three-floors disco, where each floor has a different musical style, from commercial music to hip hop and house music.

Radio Londra (Via di Monte Testaccio, 66), is the place to be for  house music lovers.

Caffè Latino is the right place if you are looking for live music. It hosted the live performance of both great italian artists such as Pino Daniele, and international artists such as Dizzie Gillespie.

Caruso Cafè de Oriente (Via di Monte Testaccio, 36) is just perfect if latin music is your favourite. From Mambo to Reggaeton, all of south-american beats are to be found here.

Rising Love lies a bit further than other clubs (Via delle Conce, 14), but it’s definitely worth a short trip, since it’s the new thing in the roman club scene, featuring dj set and video projections. You can get there with a 25 mins walk or take bus 3 until Piazzale Ostiense, then walk until Via Ostiense.

Per una visita rapida, il consiglio è di entrare nella Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (Via di San Calisto, che si trova nell’omonima e vivace piazza ad appena 5 minuti dal Trastevere Bed & Breakfast. Si tratta di una chiesa molto antica (la costruzione risale al IV secolo d.C.), resa unica dagli incredibili mosaici che ne adornano sia la facciata che l’abside. La Basilica è aperta tutti i giorni dalle 7.30 alle 13 e dalle 16 alle 19.

Se avete a disposizione un’intera mattinata, è d’obbligo visitare l’Orto Botanico (Largo Cristina di Svezia, 24): uno dei maggiori in Italia, si estende per 12 ettari e comprende 2000 mq di serre. Riparato dal colle Gianicolo e irrigato da ruscelli, l’Orto ospita circa 3000 specie di piante. È aperto dalle 9 alle 19, e la visita dura circa 2-3 ore (c’è possibilità di visita guidata).
L’Orto è raggiungibile a piedi dal Bed and Breakfast in 10 minuti.

Per gli amanti dei buoni affari, la domenica mattina è da dedicare al mercato di Porta Portese. Dal Bed & Breakfast vi basterà dirigervi verso Ponte Sublicio: il mercato inizia in Piazza di Porta Portese (5 minuti a piedi dal Bed & Breakfast) e si estende per diversi chilometri. Nel mercato si trova un po’ di tutto ed  è solitamente affollato. Prendetevi il tempo che vi serve: il mercato è aperto dalle 6:00 alle 14:00, il consiglio è di passarci l’intera mattinata per trovare le offerte migliori.

Da non perdere la veduta spettacolare di Roma che si gode dal Colle Gianicolo e dal Parco omonimo dove ogni giorno il cannone spara a salve per segnare il mezzogiorno. La strada per arrivare non è lunga, ma è in salita. Per i meno sportivi, il consiglio è di arrivare in via Mameli e da lì prendere il piccolo bus elettrico 115, che vi porterà in cima. Nel Parco troverete anche il Monumento a Garibaldi.

Infine, dedicate un’ora a visitare il Museo di Roma in Trastevere, in Piazza Sant’Egidio. Il Museo – che si trova a 10 minuti dal Bed & Breakfast – ospita numerose esposizioni durante l’anno (tra queste le fotografie premiate del World Press Photo) ed una collezione permanente dedicata a Trastevere.

If you don’t want to spend too much time, pay a quick visit to Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (Via di San Calisto), placed in the omonimous and lively square, just 5 minutes from Trastevere Bed & Breakfast. It is a really ancient church (it was built in the IV century A.D.), unique because of its incredible mosaics, enriching both the facade and the absid. The Basilica is open everyday from 7.30 to 13 and from 16 to 19.

If you have the whole morning, you must see the Orto Botanico (Botanical Garden, Largo Cristina di Svezia, 24): one of the biggest of its kind in Italy, covers a surface of 12 hectars and and encloses 2000 square meters of greenhouses. Shielded by Gianicolo Hill and watered by streams, the Garden hosts more than 3000 species of plants. Opening time is 9 to 19, the visit will take you from 2 to 3 hours (you can have guided visit). You can reach the Garden from the Bed and Breakfast with a 10 minutes walk.

If you love bargains, you should spend Sunday morning in Porta Portese market. From the Bed & Breakfast just head to Ponte Sublicio: the market begins in Piazza di Porta Portese (5 minutes walking from the Bed & Breakfast) and goes on for several kilometres. In the market you will find a bit of everything, and usually lots of people. Take your time: the market is open from 6:00 to 14:00. Spend the whole morning there if you want to find the best offers.

Don’t miss the spectacular view of Rome from Gianicolo Hill and the omonimous Park, where every day the cannon shoots to mark noon. The road to get there is not long, but it is steep. If you are not a sporty type, go to via Mameli and take the small electric bus 115, that will take you to the top of the hill. In the Park you will also find the monument to Garibaldi.

Also pay a visit to Museo di Roma in Trastevere, in St. Egidio Square: it is just 10 minutes from the Bed and Breakfast, and during the year it hosts some interesting exhibitions (including the stunning photos from World Press Photo) as well as a permanent collection dedicated to Trastevere.
